Brushy Mt. State Pen – social justice field trip

Join Student Life on a field trip to BRUSH MOUNTAIN STATE PENITENTIARY in nearby Tennessee on TUESDAY, SEPT. 17!

The trip is a full day, with van/bus transportation leaving the various campus locations in the morning (check with your Site for specific time), and not returning until approximately 7:00pm that evening. Students participating in the trip will need to make arrangements with instructors of any classes that will be missed that day but Student Life can provide a verification letter that you have signed up for the trip; and confirmation of your attendance of the trip will be shared with faculty afterwards. Some faculty may offer extra credit for those that attend.

Students interested in signing up should email stulife@highlands.edu with their Name, GHC ID#, Campus location, Cell phone contact, Lunch choice, and whether you will ride the bus/van or drive yourself. The deadline to register is Sept. 10, or until the trip fills up.

Student Life will cover the admission into the park and lunch on-site. Limited transportation is also available, on a first-come, first-served basis. Please indicate when you sign-up if you plan to ride the bus/van. Students may elect to drive themselves as well, but must meet at the location at the assigned time to enter with the group.

Lunch selections will include: 1. Pulled pork sandwich, slaw, French fries, cookie, and a drink or 2. Turkey sandwich, French fries, cookie, and a drink; or 3. Vegetarian/vegan lunch option Salad & Baked potato, cookie, and drink. Please indicate which lunch option you prefer when you sign-up.

Brushy Mountain was the last place you wanted to find yourself – right in the middle of Tennessee’s first maximum-security prison holding the state’s most violent murderers, robbers and rapists for over a century. From former slaves, Civil War prisoners, and Reconstruction carpetbagger criminals,  all the way to James Earl Ray, the man that assassinated Martin Luther King Jr., and other contemporary criminals. With some sentences of 200 years or more, most of the men who walked through its gates would never be walking out. Come see for yourself just what life was like for lost souls at the End of the Line.

This trip is part of the GHC common theme of Social Justice for the 2019-2020 academic year. Several programs and events that reflect the common theme will be held throughout the year, and students may earn extra credit for participation as well as earn a certificate of social justice awareness by attending a minimum number of programs. See the Department of Student Life at your GHC location for more information.
