Honoring Black History Month: Phillis Wheatley

Join Student Engagement as we honor Black History Month by highlighting former slaves who went on to impact America.

“In every human breast, God has implanted a principle, which we call Love of Freedom.” Phillis Wheatley

Despite being enslaved, Phillis Wheatley is one of the most well-known 18th century poets. Wheatley was the first enslaved woman, Afro-American published poet. She was also the third colonial American woman to have her work published. Wheatley paved the way for future authors with her perseverance and strength.
