Honoring Black History Month: Sojourner Truth

Join Student Engagement as we honor Black History Month by highlighting former slaves who went on to impact America.

“Truth is powerful and it prevails.” Sojourner Truth

Even though she was born slave, Sojourner Truth became a well known activist for abolition and women’s rights. She escaped slavery with her infant daughter in 1826, but still without her son. Truth was the first black woman to sue a white man- and win. Upon her win, she was granted custody of her son.
