RSO Spotlight: Creative Writing Club

Throughout the Summer, the Dept. of Student Life will be spotlighting some of our over 50 student organizations! Getting involved in a student organization is a great way to enhance your time at GHC by meeting new people, gaining new experiences, developing new skills, and having fun!

We are looking for new leadership for the 2020-2021 academic year, so if you are interested in serving as our club president, VP, or secretary, please send one of us an email.

Pre-COVID:
We meet once a week in person in Cartersville on Thursdays from 11 am to 12 pm to workshop students’ poems, short stories, and book chapters. We use Zoom to broadcast to all other campuses and online students studying from home; these students are able to participate in the workshops as well.

We hold monthly poetry nights on the third Thursday of the month from 6:30-8:00 pm @ Southern Muggs Coffee Shop in downtown Cartersville.

Each semester, the club decides which outreach projects and volunteer projects to participate in. We’ve held donation drives for the local battered women’s shelter, conducted writing workshops for the kids at the Boys and Girls Club, and hosted Halloween parties for GHC students.

We regularly host nature writing workshops while kayaking down the Etowah or exploring Old Car City; we’ve hosted ekphrastic writing workshops at the Booth Museum in downtown Cartersville.

Post-COVID:
We are planning to meet weekly via ZOOM to workshop students’ poems, short stories, and book chapters. We haven’t settled on a day and time for the meetings yet, but we’re open to feedback from club members and potential club members.

We are considering holding poetry nights virtually for the health and safety of our students and faculty. More on that later.

As more literary events go virtual, such as the Decatur Book Festival has just announced, we will have more opportunities to attend events while maintaining the health and safety of our club members. More on that later.
