Beware Honor Society Email and Text Scams

Honor society scams aren’t new. However, people are still being victimized by dubious organizations and several GHC students have reported receiving text messages from organizations inviting them to pay membership dues for special graduation regalia. Be on the lookout for the warning signs of a honor society scam by asking yourself the following questions when receiving one of these messages:

  • Is the honor society a member of the Association of College Honor Societies (https://www.achshonor.org/)? If not, it’s probably a scam.
  • Is the honor society an officially recognized student organization at GHC? Our honor societies can be found at https://www.highlands.edu/sample-page/honorific-groups/
  • Finally, be on alert for poorly composed invitation messages and texts from honors society that contain bad grammar, misspellings or are missing key details, such as why you were nominated.

If the message doesn’t seem legitimate, don’t click (or tap) on any links in it. Even clicking on an unsubscribe link may put you at risk. Instead, simply delete it and block it if your mobile device allows.
