Information reported on form 1098-T:
On the 1098-T form, Georgia Highlands College reports student’s name, SSN, address and indicates if the student was at least half-time during the calendar year. The college reports the payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses during the calendar year. Per IRS guidelines, GHC has changed reporting methods from Box 2 to Box 1 for 2018. Please note this form is CALENDAR based; January 1, 2018- December 31, 2018.
Amounts included in Box 1 , “Payment received for qualified tuition and related expenses”:
This represents the amounts of payments received during the calendar year for qualified tuition and related expenses. The amount report is the total amount paid less any refunds made during the calendar year that relate to qualified tuition and related expenses.
Amounts included in Box 4 , “Adjustments made for a prior year”:
This represents any reduction in charges made for qualified tuition and related expenses processed during the calendar year that relate to amounts billed that were reported for a prior year. The student could have an adjustment if they had any changes during this calendar year which affected the previous calendar year, i.e. late withdrawals.
Amounts included in Box 5 , “Scholarship and grants”:
This represents any scholarships or grants that were administered and processed during the calendar year for the payment of the student’s costs of attendance. Scholarships and grants include all payments received from a third party (excluding family members and loan proceeds). This includes payments received from governmental and private entities such as the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, etc. If you received other forms of outside scholarships and grants not administered by Georgia Highlands College, it is your responsibility to report this to your tax advisor.
